Rai Sanyo Buntokuden Hall

7-2 Hijiyama-cho, Minami-ku

Located at Hijiyama Park near Tamon-in-ji, just off Hijiyama-dori Ave, where Rai Sanyo is buried. It is somewhat difficult to find. Starting in front of Tanmon-in-ji continue following the road up into the park. The road sone curves. At this curve there are some rocky steps to hte left which are almost hidden with vegetation. These steps lead quickly up to the hall, which is also hidden by vegetation. The foot of the road is near Tsurumi-bashi Bridge.

The hall, built in 1932 from reinforced concrete, is now derilect with the exception of a family of cats. The Kurin Tower (roof ornament) was warped by the shockwave from the atomic bomb blast.

Located to the left of the hall. In an area which is blocked off and overgrown with weeds. The plaque is also broken and lying on the ground. And the tree, while impressive, looks dead.

Plaque:
This is an old pine, with a height of 3 m and a trunk circumference at chest level of 2.85 m, has branches extending to the east and west for more than 15m. The extended branches resemble monkey paws, an is called an enkozukuri (monkey/badger) layout.

This unique branch extension is of human origin, and is an important material for understanding the art of gardening. The tree is also valuable as it is one of the oldest remaining in the city.
