Chuo Koen: Catapla Tree

Chuo Koen (Central Park)

15 Moto-machi, Naka ku

Located in the north east of the park, between the crossing to Hiroshima castle and the Municiple Housing Estate on the Oto-gawa river.

Catapla Tree: 810m

Plaque
This Common Catalpa survived the atomic bombing on August 6th 1945. It was apparently transplanted here from an unknown location, as on the north side of the tree, opposite the direction of the hypocenter, there are deep scorch marks extending from the roots to the tip, a testimony to its survival status.
